Cardon Mountain

Ascent to the chapel of the Virgen del Tanquito

Our ascent to the chapel of the Virgen del Tanquito starts from the car park located 2.6 km north of the town of El Cardón, next to the road that leads to Pájara and La Pared. An information panel marks the place.

Immediately we pass next to a dry dam, built to store water from the scarce rains that fall in the area and whose bottom is usually covered with pampering or Moorish tobacco. The trail ascends a steep caliche-covered hillside to the west.

Halfway there we will find a small esplanade where there is a post with a pedestal in the middle of a circle of stones used in the pilgrimage of El Tanquito, when at the beginning of May the neighbors climb the Virgin from the town. The area is a spectacular viewpoint from where you can see the two seas, windward and leeward.

From this point the path runs along the northern slope of the mountain, from where we will enjoy beautiful views of the north coast, reaching the Cofete coast and the Jandía mountains.

Start of the Trail

Before arriving we must cross a gate that allows access to the fenced environment of the hermitage, built to prevent the passage of goats to the sources. It is important to always leave it closed once we have passed.

At the end of the path we find a small excavated cave next to a natural spring . A few dozen meters from there is the chapel of the Virgen del Tanquito. The environment has an oven, barbecues and the small tank that gives the place its name, as well as benches and rest areas.
