Tenería de Taboeta

It is the only one of these semi-industrial facilities that is preserved in Fuerteventura. It is located in the vicinity of Risco Negro.

It was dedicated to the transformation of skin into leather, a basic element for making clothes, farming implements and various utensils. The skins used came mainly from goats (males) and donkeys and sheep from the island, and sometimes from Lanzarote. The end of the tannery is situated in the fifties of the 20th century, motivated, among other reasons, by the lack of supply of palm sumac, an important tanning substance necessary for the transformation of the tanned product. Other substances used in the tanning process were water, lime, alum, wheat bran, and even dog excrement.

The building was restored by the city council in 2004.
