bisbita

Pipit

Scientific name: Anthus berthelotii

Status: Pipit is only present in the Canary archipelago —which is home to the world’s largest population of the species— and in the Portuguese islands of Madeira and Salvajes.

Habitat and distribution: It is the endemic bird of the Canary Islands with the widest distribution, as it is very common and easy to observe in all habitats and places, from sea level to the highest mountains, including cities.

How to recognize it: Small bird with gray-brown plumage, lightly striped, long tail with white outer feathers and slender thin orange legs.

Curiosities: It is the only pipit that nests in the Canary Islands and one of the easiest birds to see as it is very trusting. In the Canary Islands it is known by the name of “caminero” or “roadrunner”, due to its habit of walking a few meters ahead of passers-by.
