The terraces are known in Fuerteventura as chains, terraces on land with steep slopes supported by a dry stone wall or slope.
These types of crops are closely linked to periods of high population density and scarce resources, such as those recorded in the first half of the 20th century. In those moments of hardship, necessity forced the Majoreros to put into production new plots of land that were previously discarded due to their low profitability.
Its construction and conservation also required the mobilization of a large amount of labor to achieve meager harvests, which is why they were the first crops to be abandoned once the economic and social conditions of the island improved.
