Jetty lime kilns

The peculiarity of these ovens, in addition to their large size, is that they have been dug directly into the rock, something unique in the Canary Islands.

Inside, powerful fires were lit capable of burning the caliche and transforming the calcium carbonate into lime, which was then shipped directly from here.

The product obtained in these furnaces was of high quality, as it was supplied with stone made up of the shell skeleton and skeletons of fossilized marine animals. It was used above all to whiten or paint buildings.
