cabra-de-costa

Coast goat

Common name: Majorera coastal goat

Scientific name: Capra aegagrus ssp. hircus

Description: The coastal goat is an old autochthonous goat breed different from the Majorera goat, descending from an ancestral herd brought by the primitive aboriginal inhabitants of Fuerteventura. Smaller and with a shorter head than its fellow islander, it is an animal of meat and non-dairy production, adapted to the extreme conditions of the island and whose coat is predominantly black and white.

Curiosities: Despite having been in Fuerteventura for more than 2,000 years, its recognition as an autochthonous breed (the fourth along with Tenerife, Palmera and Majorera) was not achieved until 2010, thanks to veterinary research that included its genetic characterization .

Being a cattle that lives semi-wild, it has a very serious impact on the threatened native vegetation, on which it feeds indiscriminately.
